It’s Node-vember!

If you’re not running a bitcoin lightning node, you should run one; it has never been easier.

Here are a few options (in order of easiest to most technical)…

Umbrel

Umbrel is great for non-techies that still want control of their finance. All you need is a Raspberry Pi, SD card and an SSD. With a simple installation, and great UI/App Store, Umbrel is the perfect balance for many between ease of use and usefulness.

myNode

Very similar to Umbrel, myNode is a simple UI with an array of apps on their app store. It’s a similar installation process to Umbrel, so this is mainly down to preference.

Bitcoin Core

If you have a computer that you’re happy to use as your Bitcoin node too, you can just run Bitcoin Core. This is as simple as click and install.

You can always install a lightning wallet on top of this later on down the line as LND just uses RPC to communicate with the node. So you can theoretically use any implementation on any computer on your local network. However here are some instructions for LND:

RaspiBolt

For those that are more tech-literate, the RaspiBolt guide is a great way to learn the ins-and-outs of running a full node with a lightning wallet attached. It’s a weekend project, but you’ll come away with great knowledge and also a full node.

DIY

If you are hardcore and want to go down the DIY route (with lightning), here is a good list of Lightning implementations read up on before choosing.

All of these options are open source and open for contributions. If you want to contribute to Bitcoin Core, check out these guides for MacOS and Windows. Every contribution helps!
